NORTH JERSEY - According to Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary, a chili dog is nothing more than "a hot dog topped with chili." While Americans eat 7 billion hot dogs every summer, "a hot dog doesn't reach its full potential as a summertime treat unless it's dripping with chili, cheese, mustard and onions:' says Food Network icon Rachael Ray. Opinions differ about what makes or breaks a chili dog. For some, a great chili dog must be off the-charts spicy. For others, it all comes down to the cheese. Some diners expect to see a thick, beanfilled chili poured over their dogs, while others prefer a thinner chili sauce. Whatever the criteria, there is a chili dog in the area for every taste.

McCobb's
The chili dog most often mentioned as a favorite is found at McCobb's at 2391 Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne. Ordering a chili dog "all the way" here means that it comes with mustard, chopped onions and celery on a bun that is served in a paper sleeve, Coney Island style.
McCobb's chili is outstanding and is their biggest seller. It combines the proper afterbum and upfront bite associated with classic chili. The addition of the chopped celery adds a small crunch that evens out the heaviness of the dog. The sauce is thick without making a mess and is made with tomato paste, giving it a boost of intense, meaty tomato flavor.
The atmosphere at McCobb's is reminiscent of an old Coney Island hot dog stand with homey decor including a 1930s tricycle hanging from the ceiling. The restaurant also has a full ice cream bar so chili dog fanciers can have an ice cream float or shake with their meal.
Elena Pugh from Butler says that the best chili dogs she has found lately are at McCobb's.
"My husband and I share a passion for the perfect chili doe she admits.
